Book about Advent receives glowing review in The Church Times

Lavinia Byrne describes Through the Chocolate window as 'a good way to deepen knowledge of the scriptures'.

In a recent article in The Church Times, Lavinia Byrne suggests books on advent. She writes, ‘this year’s crop yields a worth while harvest’.

Among the crop is Beyond the Chocolate Window by Becky Lovatt.

Lavinia writes…

“Published by Onwards and Upwards, her book invites us to go beyond the sweetie- or even gin-tasting windows of a contemporary Advent calendar. Hence the title, Beyond the Chocolate Window, with its reflections on hope — Hope Foretold, Hope Realised, and Hope to Come. Unusually, she writes in the voice of the characters who people her selection of Bible readings. So we have the voices of Eve, David, Micah, and Nehemiah, as well as those of Nicodemus, and Sarah, the wife of Cleopas. This is a good way to deepen knowledge of the scriptures as well as understand the season of Advent.”

‘her book invites us to go beyond the sweetie- or even gin-tasting windows of a contemporary Advent calendar.’

About the Book

Advent is a time when the excitement of Christmas begins to build. The shops are stocked, the TV advertisements are in overdrive and the windows of the Advent calendar reveal each day another chocolate delight.

But, of course, Advent is really about preparing our hearts to celebrate how God stepped into the world in the person of our saviour Jesus. Becky Lovatt invites us to join her on a journey through the Bible, exploring the thoughts and feelings of some of the people touched by God, so that we too can deepen our relationship with him.

This book presents daily meditations for Advent and Christmas, offering new insights into well-known stories. Each meditation is accompanied by a scripture reading, questions offered for reflection, an action to reinforce the message and a prayer.
